The Process: Steps Involved in a Spirometry Test


1. Pre-Test Preparation:

Occupational health nurses prepare employees for the test by explaining the procedure, ensuring they understand the process, and addressing any concerns or queries.

Employees are advised to avoid smoking or heavy meals before the test, as these factors can influence lung function.


2. Equipment Setup:

The nurse sets up the spirometer, a device connected to a computer that measures airflow. The spirometer has a mouthpiece connected to a tube, which the employee will use to breathe in and out during the test.


3. Instruction and Practice:

The nurse provides clear instructions on how to perform the test, ensuring the employee understands the required breathing manoeuvres.

Employees are asked to practice taking deep breaths and blowing forcefully into the spirometer to familiarize themselves with the process.


4. Actual Test Execution:

The employee sits in a comfortable position and takes a deep breath, sealing their lips tightly around the mouthpiece.

They are then instructed to exhale as hard and fast as possible into the spirometer for several seconds until their lungs are completely empty.

This process is repeated several times to ensure accurate measurements, with short breaks between each attempt to avoid fatigue.


5. Assessment and Recording:

The spirometer records various parameters, including forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1).

The occupational health nurse reviews the results for consistency and accuracy.


6. Analysis and Interpretation:

The recorded data is analysed to assess lung function parameters. A comparison with predicted values based on age, sex, height, and ethnicity is made to evaluate deviations from normal lung function.


7. Discussion and Recommendations:

The nurse discusses the results with the employee, explaining the findings and offering recommendations, if necessary.

Depending on the results, the employee might receive guidance on respiratory health management or further medical evaluation.
